We have taken the liberty to compile some of the most important considerations to take when choosing an agency that best suits your talent and skill set.
1. Do your homework
Many are quick to judge modeling as an easy ground for scam and illegitimacy. While there are pseudo-agencies that can be potentially dangerous, the truth is that there are plenty of credible and professional model agencies out there. Don’t get lazy, do your research.
Compare the various agencies’ websites and services, and most importantly read the reviews and testimonials of the models that have worked at that agency. Ensure that the company is located in a prominent location with a good working atmosphere. A successful history of their projects is also an indication of the legitimacy of their work.
2. Type of Talent Agency
Find out the type of talents the model agency covers and whether they suit you. Find out the opportunities offered given by the agency, and ensure that they suit your style. Look up on the agency’s past projects, which will give you a rough foresight of the shoots you can expect to be engaged in. Choose the agency that best suits your style.
3. Don’t believe everything you hear
A good agency need not have 100% good reviews as there are many critics and “Internet trolls” who simply want to defame a company. A good company usually has a good media presence which exposes itself to all kinds of feedback which need not necessarily be true. Sieve through the comments and pick out the well-reasoned opinions. Don’t believe hearsay; Get on the ground, and talk to the members of the agency to derive a clear indication of the company’s work.
4. No portfolio required, free test shoots, guaranteed job? More like guaranteed scam !
This is a definite way to judge if a company is dangerous. They promise free test shoots and might say there’s no need for a portfolio, and almost immediately guarantee you a job. A credible agency will be dedicated to creating a good portfolio for you, and not just focused on their profit. A small investment goes a long way, and many successful models need to invest into strong portfolio created by a credible agency. Furthermore, time is invested into choosing models best suiting clients’ needs and a good amount of time is spent in the process of ensuring the best quality of projects are delivered to their clients.
5. Ask about the Bookers expertise.
During your interview, make sure you inquire on the bookers and whether they specialize in your area of expertise. No professional modeling company will promise you an immediate opportunity. They will take the time to review and liaise you with the job that works best for you.
6. Never be discouraged, keep pursuing your passion .
In an interview with Glamour magazine, Tyra Banks had confessed that she was rejected by the first six agencies at the onset of her modeling career. It is no mean feat to excel amidst the competition in the industry, and harder still to find the agency that suits you.
